Our Mexican rugs are hand-woven by the talented artisans of the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, and all carpet components are 100% natural. The making of the carpet starts with the mowing of a lamb at the right time of the year to obtain a wool of superior quality. The wool should then be brushed and rolled to create the yarn that will then be dyed. The colors are entirely extracted from elements of nature such as pomegranate peel, dried flowers, walnut husks, roots as well as insects like grana cochinilla.According to the desired color, the coloring element must sometimes ferment in water up to 3 weeks. To color the lambswool, mix everything in a large pot of hot water so that the color is absorbed by the wool. Again, the time in the pot will depend on the desired color. Following this process, the wool must dry and the craftsman will be ready to begin his work at the loom. Depending on the complexity of the design, the work of a carpet can take up to 3 weeks. Having visited the families of Teotitlan del Valle who make the carpets, I can tell you that there is a lot of work behind each one of them.
